Jewish District and Basilica in Třebíč

The picturesque Jewish district with its synagogue and Jewish cemetery were entered in theUNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage Sites in 2003, along with the Romanesque-Gothic basilica of St. Prokop in Třebíč.
Jews and Christian had lived together in Třebíč for many centuries. A maze of narrow streets of the Jewish ghetto, with two synagogues, is situated in the immediate vicinity of the St. Prokop Basilica. The basilica is a part of the Benedictine monastery that was founded here by Moravian princes at the beginning of the 12th. The Basilica is considered one of the jewels of medieval architecture. With its approximately three thousand tombstones, the Jewish cemetery in Třebíč is one of the largest in the Czech Republic.
