New Generation Museum
Experience the Zdar estate
Let us take you for a walk through eight centuries of history in the grounds of the former Cistercian monastery and current estate.
Experience the trip, enjoy the story!
Experience the unique atmosphere of history, life, creativity, and beautiful nature of Žďár.
The monastery’s history began to be written as far back as the mid-1200 when Cistercian monks founded a monastery in the deep woods of Žďár. New trends and dynamic changes occurred in the 18th century under the influence of Abbot Vejmluva who – jointly with the builder Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel – brought new life to the site. At the Abbot’s incentive, Santini built his masterwork – the Pilgrimage Church of St. Jan Nepomuk at Zelená Hora, one of the UNESCO’s official heritage sites today. During the reforms under Joseph II, in 1784, the monastery was closed and gradually transformed into the current estate. In the 1990’s, the Zdar estate was restituted to the Kinský family.
The tour now continues with new installations that combine immersive elements and experience with exhibits borrowed from prominent Czech institutions.
The exhibition on the ground level is dedicated to the Cistercian Order and early Middle Ages; the upper level contains collections of exhibits from the beautiful, colorful world of Baroque.
Step into the dark forest where the brave monks built their first monastery. Experience one day in the life of a monk or discover the beauty of Cistercian artworks. Through the kaleidoscope, you will be able to move to an era of prosperity, nourishing arts, sciences, and architecture, i.e. the era of Baroque.
